The Romanian Air Force has confirmed Monday (15th) as the last flights of the MiG-21 LanceR fighter aircraft in the country. The combat aircraft is one of the oldest in service among the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The country operated various versions of the Soviet MiG-21 fighter from the early 1960s, having received the latest variations of the combat jet in the following decade.

It was these more modern fighters that were upgraded in the 1990s to the LanceR standard, with the original avionics being replaced by components developed by the Israeli company Elbit, allowing them to operate Soviet or Israeli origin weapons.

The MiG-21s have been in the process of decommissioning for a few years now, with their role in the Eastern European country’s air defense being taken over by used F-16A and B fighters purchased from Norway.
